Leadership in the face of drought

Olam SVI is deeply committed to the continuity of operations during periodic California droughts. Olam SVI is among the first food processors in California to work with World Wildlife Foundation and Alliance for Water Stewardship to develop a safe and sustainable water stewardship commitment and management plan.

Nevada, USA

Harnessing a Geothermal

Olam SVI's plant in Fernley, Nevada is the world's only onion dehydration facility utilizing direct geothermal power. Naturally occurring superheated steam is drawn up from tube wells and used to dry the onions, reducing natural gas usage and dehydration costs significantly. After dehydration, water is poured back into the ground thereby ensuring no depletion of the water table and maintaining the natural balance of the ecosystem.

India

Reducing Inputs in India

In India, Olam SVI provides comprehensive, regular training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), embedding sustainable agriculture through training on labor practices, land use, efficient application of pesticides and fertilizers and crop drying techniques, among others. Our focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) helps farmers produce chili that is free of pesticide residues and aflatoxin and meets all major food safety norms in the EU and U.S. – better for the farmers, customers and end consumers. The result? Costs have declined for Indian farmers by 15% and pesticide inputs are down 30%, while average crop yields are up by 10%.

Vietnam

Bringing Rainforest Certification to Vietnam

In the Ba Ria-Vung province in Vietnam, Olam SVI worked with a pilot group of 98 farmers to produce one of the world's first Rainforest Alliance-certified black pepper supply chains. Farmers were supported to apply Sustainable Agriculture Standards (SAS), developed by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) to generate ecological, social and economic benefits and market access.
