The Preposition Proposition

完善您對介詞的了解

A preposition is a word governing, and usually preceding, a名詞or pronoun and expressing a relationship to another word or element in a clause, e.g., "the manthe street," "she arrivedthe bell." Sounds easy, right?

再想想!令人驚訝的是,小介詞如何在您的寫作中產生很大的影響。例如,說話someone is totally different from speaking一個人。前者具有負麵的含義,責罵聽眾或不斷交談,拒絕讓對方參加對話。

英語作為第二語言(ESL)作家對這些小但重要的單詞無休止地感到沮喪,這也就不足為奇了 - 英語中的介詞比其他任何語言都更多!

常見的介詞問題

經過腳和foot interchangeable? Does one go散步或為了a walk?Grammarians have bantered issues like these back and forth for decades.我們喜歡徒步,,,,步行is not really wrong. Editors normally accept the phrase "going步行“指的是有組織的活動(我要去the Cancer Society'sWalk for the Cure, for example), but going為了a walk is acceptable when referring to a leisurely stroll.

有時,介詞中的這些微妙之處揭示了一位非本地英語作者。如果你說你把書放, 而不是,桌子,您的含義很可能會被理解,但是您對英語的缺乏熟悉是顯而易見的。

Incorrect use of prepositions is becoming far too common

Even though incorrectly used, slang is commonly used because proper English may seem too formal and may not always be recognized as being correct. "To whom does this coat belong?" might be viewed as snobbish to a person who would normally say, "Who does this coat belong to?" Therefore, it is essential to consider your target audience. While ending a sentence with a preposition usage may be common, a scholarly學期論文still requires precise grammar.

Don't separate a preposition from its phrase

根據許多人的說法,語法的基本罪之一是ending a sentence with a preposition。In a scene inD.C. Cab, Mr. T, who portrays a taxi driver, asks his fare, "Where are you going to?" The man, condescendingly, reminds him of the rule, which, as one can imagine, causes Mr. T to get rather angry. Although ending a sentence with a preposition is not technically incorrect, the rule is so widely touted that it is best to avoid doing so in all formal writing. In our example, then, Mr. T should have asked, "To where are you going?"
